Conference President Long Beach Mayor Beverly O’Neill addressed hundreds of urban park and recreation directors, superintendents, CEOs, and commissioners at an Urban Park and Recreation Summit May 18 in Chicago.
Serving as the keynote speaker, O’Neill addressed the issue as to why local parks and recreation programs are important to the quality of life of cities. “It is clear that our cities’ park systems and recreation programs that we offer to our citizens are essential to the health and vitality of our cities,” stated O’Neill.
The mayor endorsed a new National Agenda for Urban Parks which is premised on four guiding principles: Urban parks must continue to promote health and wellness; stimulate community and economic development; protect the environment; and educate, protect and enrich America’s young people.
“Urban parks are part of the solution to building healthier, economically vibrant and stronger communities. Mayors and park advocates must work together to promote this new agenda for parks,” stated O’Neill.
