Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa initiated a gun buyback program citywide where 1,696 guns were taken into custody by authorities. The program is part of Villaraigosa’s 2009 Gang Plan and was a joint effort by the LAPD, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and various community and faith-based organizations and foundations.
The buybacks took place on May 11 at 19 different locations in the city. People who turned in a handguns, shotguns or rifles received either a $100 Visa Card or a gift card. Those who turned in high caliber guns, such as an AK-47, received a $200 gift card per unit.
According to LAPD Chief William J. Bratton, last year, more than 1,500 people were victims of gun violence and far too many were victims of gang violence.
Villaraigosa thanked the Los Angeles residents who are securing a safer city for every family by turning in their guns and helping to get dangerous weapons off the streets.
Authorities ended the day by giving the public 1,302 gift cards, a total value of $130,200.
