Charlotte Mayor McCrory Wins Republican Primary for North Carolina’s Governor Race
May 19, 2008
Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory won the North Carolina primary on May 6 and became the Republican nominee for Governor. McCrory won with 46 percent of the vote, in a five-person race, which was enough to avoid a run-off with his nearest competitor, State Sen. Fred Smith.
McCrory, who currently is in his seventh two-year term and is the longest serving mayor in Charlotte’s history, will face the Democratic opponent, the former state legislator and current Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue.
McCrory currently serves as Chair of the Conference of Mayors’ Environment Committee and is a member of the Conference’s Advisory Board.
