Detroit Elects Dave Bing Mayor
May 11, 2009
Newly elected Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will serve the remainder of the term left behind by former Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick. The former NBA star, who played for the Detroit Pistons, headed to victory over Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. in his first run for elected office.
In his victory speech, Bing thanked the people of Detroit and commented that their vote would enable him to start work immediately.
Also the owner of an automotive supply company, Bing promised that he would bring efficiency, transparency, honesty and integrity back to the mayor's office. He also said he would make sure that Detroit’s neighborhoods are safe and ensure the city’s children the best education possible.
Despite Bing's victory, another mayoral primary will be held in August and a general election in November to decide who will serve in that post for the four-year term that starts in 2010.
