Chicago's 311 System Wins Public Service Excellence Award

May 10, 2004

The city of Chicago's 311 System on May 3 was named the local government winner of the 2004 Public Service Excellence Award, conferred by the Public Employees Roundtable (PER).

311 City Service was nominated and ultimately selected based on its outstanding achievement in local government by creating a system to streamline citizens' requests for information and services. As the local government winner, 311 City Services was recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington (DC).

The Public Service Excellence Awards recognize innovation, raise awareness of exemplary public service, and provide public agencies a showcase for outstanding programs by federal, state, county and city governments, as well as community outreach groups. Winners are selected for demonstrating creativity, innovation, commitment and effectiveness.

"Chicago's 311 furthers Mayor Richard M. Daley's goal of improving the quality of life for all Chicagoans. We are honored that 311 City Services was selected as the local government winner for this award," said Director Theodore F. O-Keefe. "This has become an important tool for both city employees and concerned citizens, and we are working with other cities to replicate our successes," he added.

In 2003, 311 City Services was named a winner in the 16th Annual Innovations in American Government Awards, which was administered in partnership with the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation of the Kennedy School Government at Harvard University, and the Council for Excellence in Government.

About the Public Employees Roundtable

PER is a non-profit, non-partisan coalition of organizations representing nearly two million public employees working together to:

  • better inform citizens about the quality of people in government and the value of the services they provide;
  • encourage excellence and esprit de corps within government; and
  • promote interest in public service careers.

Since 1985, the National Public Service Excellence Awards have been giving tribute to programs that embody the highest standards of government.

GEICO and USA Today partnered with the Roundtable in sponsoring the awards.
