The May 2006 issue of Vanity Fair magazine, a special “Green Issue,” singled out mayors achieving local steps in a wide variety of pro-environment actions.

The article mentioned specific accomplishments for each mayor.

Toronto Mayor David Miller’s city received an award from the Climate Group for being a low-carbon leader and for his country in ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley got high marks for his Environmental Action Agenda, a model for other cities and for converting 130 city vehicles into hybrids and also for installing 10,000 bike racks in Chicago.

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz enlisted the private sector to help clean up city waterways.

Baltiimore Mayor Martin O’Malley received a leadership award from the Energy Efficiency Forum.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels led 212 American cities to adopt the Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has the largest municipal fleet of alternative fuel vehicles, the largest city-owned solar-powered system, and a local recycling program, which returns two-thirds of trash back to use.
