Sugar Land (TX) Mayor Wallace to Join Race for Former House Majority Leader DeLay’s Seat

April 10, 2006

Following the announcement by House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s intent to resign his Congressional seat last week, Sugar Land Mayor David G. Wallace, a Conference of Mayors Trustee, announced his candidacy to replace DeLay.

Several other Republicans contacted party officials to get on the November 7th ballot.

A committee of select Republican precinct chairman from the four counties comprising Delay’s 22nd Congressional District will select a nominee to replace him.

Other candidates may include Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, who worked with Houston Mayor Bill White to help the city absorb Hurricane Katrina refugees.

Former Democratic Congressman Nick Lampson will be on the November ballot.

Delay said he would announce his departure date before mid-June. Texas Governor Rick Perry is expected to call a special election to fill DeLay’s seat.

A Conference Trustee, Wallace has served the Conference in other capacities. These include Co-chairman of the Homeland Security Task Force, Member and past Co-Chairman of the Urban Water Council, and member of other Conference committees.
