As Presidential Campaigns Unfold, US Mayors in Mix with Their Candidates

By Guy F. Smith
April 7, 2008

As the intensity of the November Presidential elections increases, mayors from cities large and small are endorsing either the presumptive GOP nominee John McCain or Democratic candidates New York Senator Hillary Clinton or Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

The Democratic campaign’s next big primary is in Pennsylvania on April 22 and Clinton in the Keystone State has the support of Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael Nutter and Pittsburgh Mayor Lee Ravenstahl. Also, Governor Ed Rendell, former Philadelphia mayor, is campaigning with Clinton.

Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey, joined by mayors Lou Thieblemont of Camp Hill, Rick Gray of Lancaster, Tom McMahon of Reading and John S. Brenner of York, are in Obama's camp.

Following are May 6 contests in Indiana and North Carolina with a combined total of 187 delegates.

Beyond May 6 left on the Democratic campaign plate are Kentucky, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. An update list of mayors who have endorsed candidates follows, complied from media and campaign sources. Since it may be incomplete, any mayor who has endorsed a candidate should send his or her name and the officially endorsed candidate to David Burns with the USCM staff at 202-861-6765 or send e-mail to dburns@usmayors.org.
