In Memoriam: Former Houston Mayor Louie Welch

Louie Welch, five-term mayor of Houston died January 27, Welch was President of The Conference of Mayors in 1972-1973. He was 89.

Former Houston Mayor Bob Lanier said Welch was one of the city’s finest mayors. “He was a good and decent man who loved public service and fought to make people’s lives better,” Lanier added.

The Houston Chronicle said that Welch served four terms on The Houston City Council and won the Mayor’s office on his fourth try.

His political career spinned nearly 40 years and began in 1949 with his first race for City Council.

In 1985, Welch lost a re-location bid to Kathryn Whitmire who was Conference of Mayors President in 1989-1990.
