Pleasanton (CA) Mayor Jennifer Hosterman, Co-Chair of the Mayors Water Council, presented a video on the computer maintenance management system that is currently in operation within her city at the recent Mayors Water Council Meeting held prior to the Conference of Mayors Leadership Meeting in Washington DC February 24. Hosterman stated that the computerized system is a critical tool for efficient city management and maintaining high service levels for city residents and businesses. The video featured an in-depth look at a user friendly and cost saving application that is helping the city align their goals to become more sustainable. Not only is the technology state of the art, but also it is saving the city money and increasing efficiencies that yield a higher quality of service for residents while also protecting the surrounding environment.
The way the city leverages the advanced technology is by combining system management software with a digitized geographic information system (GIS). Pleasanton and it<0x2019>s Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) developed a fully integrated GIS system with specialized modules that allow multiple agencies to track and record work and regulatory compliance to improve and manage their water and waste water systems with a supervisory and data acquisition system, that has lead to improve asset management and operational efficiencies. Daniel Smith, Director of Operations and Services Department, explained in the video how the computerized system can pinpoint any utility (e.g., sewer pipe, water pipe, street light, etc.) on a screen, and identify the exact location of service points. He also explained how the system allows centralized control of the water Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA System) to maintain service levels and protect public health.
An added value of the system is its ability to help city managers store and access resource allocations for utilities to help with budget reporting and budget forecasting. The CMMS system is a critical tool in achieving fiscal sustainability.
