The Democratic Party has appointed Conference of Mayors President Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa to chair its national convention in early fall, scheduled to be held in Charlotte (NC).
The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, announced the decision to DNC members earlier last month.
Chairing the national convention, where Democrats expect to nominate President Barack Obama for a second term, will place Villaraigosa in yet another leading national role.
Villaraigosa has dedicated his career to civic engagement and empowering people at the grassroots,” said Schultz. “And that’s exactly what we need to be successful at this convention, input and engagement from Americans across the country.”
Villariagosa is currently serving in his second term as mayor of Los Angeles.
