As previously reported in U.S.MAYOR, the House Republican Study Committee – comprised of 175 Representatives – has proposed the total elimination of CDBG. This group will play a key role in funding decisions that come before the House in coming days as debates rage on both current year appropriations (FY 2011)
and funding for the next budget year (FY 2012)

In addition, the House Appropriations Committee is working on legislation to cut up to $100 billion from what the Obama Administration had requested for the current funding year. This fight is imminent in that the current stopgap funding bill for FY 2011 expires on March 4.

Mayors who have members of either of these two groups are urged to call them now and urge that CDBG be fully funded at $4 billion through the remainder of this Fiscal Year. Any cut in the program this year will severely hurt the campaign to preserve CDBG through the budget process for next year, which will begin when the President releases his budget on February 14.
