District of Columbia Mayor Anthony A. Williams welcomed the Nation's mayors to the Capitol City and reminded everyone that homeland security and the economy continue to be primary challenges for American cities.

Williams stressed the importance of finding innovative ways to meet the extra demands placed on local budgets resulting from the "war on terrorism," as well as the growing needs local residents who suffer from the loss of well-paying jobs and economy that is limping toward recovery.

Moreover, he underscored how critical it is that mayors work with Congress and the Administration to ensure solid relationships with the Federal government that yield positive results for city residents.

Williams issued a charge to the over 250 mayors in attendance: "We mayors must work closely together toward one goal and one goal only — the success our cities and, in turn, the success of our great nation."
