Safe City Update: IntelliCast Target Notification Denver Responds to Mid-Air Collision

February 3, 2003

On Friday, January 24th Denver launched IntelliCastSM Target Notification when two small planes collided in mid-air scattering debris over a densely populated area of the city. Local officials quickly recorded a message and instructed IntelliCast to begin calling more than 7,000 residents within the affected area, advising them of what had happened and how they could help, by either calling a dedicated number with eyewitness accounts, or notifying officials of the location of debris. Importantly, the message also instructed citizens to not disturb the debris. The outbound emergency notification resulted in thirty calls immediately following the event launch, and another fifteen coming in over the next 24-hours, all of which provided timely information relative to the incident.

As a result of using IntelliCast, Denver officials accomplished three critical goals in a very short period of time:

    1. Instantly reduced inbound 9-1-1 calls of people inquiring what happened by proactively disseminating information

    2. Immediately secured a large accident site, protecting the integrity of evidence needed for the accident investigation

    3. Quickly gathered eyewitness testimony, decreasing the need for officials to conduct time consuming and costly door-to- door canvassing

These results speak for themselves, the value of which are difficult to put a price on. For more information please call Rhonda Spears at The United States Conference of Mayors at (202) 861-6794 or email her at rspears@usmayors.org.
