Read Across America Campaign

January 12, 2004

March 4, 2004 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Seuss. For the seventh year to recognize and commemorate his wonderful accomplishments of providing wonderful, rich and thoughtful stories for children, Read Across America recognizes Dr. Suess' birthday. Community leaders from across the country have made Read Across America the nation's largest reading celebration by their participation.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance, value, and fun of reading throughout the year. The focus of this year's activities is to draw attention on how important it is to read in addition to helping students master the basic skills. Volunteers from across the country will don their red and white "Cat in the Hat" hats and read to children.

In past years, presidents and first ladies, cabinet officers, mayors and other state and local elected officials, corporate executives, community leaders, parents and grandparents, professional athletes, celebrities and other volunteers have taken the time to create a special program and read to children. The Seussentennial offers all mayors a wonderful opportunity to go to a school, a library, or even have the children visit city hall and read them a story.

Mayors across the country understand the importance of reading as a critical skill. March 2nd provides mayors with a wonderful opportunity to take a leadership role and to encourage other adults in their city to participate. Also, the mayor can lead by example by selecting a classroom, library or your office and read a book to students. The U.S. Conference of Mayors encourages all mayors to participate, show their interest and commitment to education, and read to a class of students.
