Statement on Gun Safety

by Wellington E. Webb, Mayor of Denver and President, The United States Conference of Mayors

"The Murder and Mayhem Must Stop"

"The murder, the mayhem, the senseless deaths of our children and the ridiculous proliferation of firearms on the streets of American cities needs to stop," Mayor Webb said. "The voice of the American citizens must be stronger and louder than the voice of the gun lobby."

"There is not one Mayor or police chief in this nation that has not had to console a wife, a husband, a mother or a father, whose loved-one was taken by a bullet. I personally have had to deliver eulogies at funerals of children as young as three-years old who were victims of gun violence and police officers who were gunned down with assault rifles. I watched as a relative of my own was shot and killed less than five feet in front of me from a stray bullet.

"The citizens of this nation rely on their mayors and their police chiefs to keep their families and their communities safe and we are doing what we can at the local level to provide sensible firearms regulations. But we can’t do this alone. Congress’s support will send a strong message that America will not tolerate gun violence and that we are committed to making our communities as safe as possible.

"As mayors and police chiefs, we will use all of our bi-partisan strength, in partnership with our local law enforcement leaders, to continue to demand the enactment of strong and common-sense reforms.

"We have heard from our citizens. They want action. Congress must respond."
