Dear Mayor:
Last year I wrote you about the weakening economy, skyrocketing health care costs and the very real impact to the retirement security for city workers as the U.S. Conference of Mayors launched the 2008 Save for Retirement Campaign. Together with our partner of 30 years, Nationwide Retirement Solutions, we created the USCM Mayor's Toolkit to help mayors retain and attract highly qualified people and earn the goodwill of their employees by encouraging them to save for retirement through deferred compensation programs. The toolkit was well received by Mayors across the country, (over 150 signed the pledge included in the toolkit to promote saving) and NAGDCA even recognized the USCM with a 2008 Leadership Recognition Award.
The toolkit is now updated for 2009 100% online at usmayors.org and we will keep adding content all year long to help you as Mayor:
- Reach out to your employees to promote the importance and benefits of saving for retirement through a deferred compensation program tailored for public employees;
- Promote city-sanctioned informational workshops for employees that are conducted by your city's deferred compensation provider;
- Sign the Pledge, your commitment to be part of the public relations effort as this program rolls out. Many mayors have already signed it, and I hope you will, too.
Both the toolkit and pledge along with a list of those who have signed it can be found at usmayors.org/saveforretirement. You can download many communication pieces to help you promote saving for retirement all year long including, email templates to spread the word to city employees, sample proclamations to establish October 18 through the 24 2009 as Save for Retirement Week in your city, newsletter articles, website content and much more! I encourage you to check back for updates and new material to help you help your City's employees save for retirement.
