May 12, 2008 Dear Mayor: With markets in flux, the economy weakening, and health care costs skyrocketing, The U.S. Conference of Mayors believes the issue of retirement security for city workers will continue to be significant and high profile. There is a huge opportunity for mayors to encourage city employees to save for retirement through deferred compensation programs, and in doing so retain and attract highly qualified people and earn the goodwill of your employees. We are launching a program to help you do just that through USCM’s 2008 Save for Retirement Campaign. We teamed up with our partner of 30 years, Nationwide Retirement Solutions, to help us build this exciting initiative for your use. Today, nearly 4,000 cities and municipalities have trusted Nationwide with their Deferred Compensation Program. Your city should participate in this national initiative even if Nationwide is not your provider. As part of USCM’s 2008 Save for Retirement Campaign, our hope is that you will: 1. Reach out to your employees to promote the importance and benefits of saving for retirement through a deferred compensation program tailored for public employees; 2. Promote city-sanctioned informational workshops for employees that are conducted by your city’s deferred compensation provider; 3. Sign the Pledge Card, your commitment to be part of public relations effort as this program rolls out. Many mayors have already signed it, and I hope you will, too. Once you signed it, just mail the pre-paid pledge card back to us. Enclosed is your communication toolkit we created to support your efforts and to encourage retirement savings among your employees. It gives you talking points and email drafts for use by both you and your managers to encourage your employees to save. The CD-ROM offers you electronic versions of the toolkit you can use to tailor the materials to your needs. USCM is committed to the success of you and your employees.
