RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF OLYMPIC DAY

WHEREAS, Olympic Day, June 23, 2009, celebrates the Olympic ideal of developing peace through sport;

WHEREAS, June 20, 2009, celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the modern Olympic movement, representing the date on which the Congress of Paris approved the proposal of Pierre de Coubertin to found the modern Olympics:

WHEREAS, for over 100 years, the Olympic movement has built a more peaceful and better world by educating young people through amateur athletics, by bringing together athletes from many countries in friendly competition, and by forging new relationships bound by friendship, solidarity, and fair play;

WHEREAS, the United States of America and Chicago, Illinois advocate these same ideals;

WHEREAS, hundreds of cities across the United States are joining together to show their support for bringing the Olympic Games to the United States in 2016 in Chicago, Illinois;

WHEREAS, Olympic Day will encourage the development of Olympic and Paralympic Sport in the United States of America;

WHEREAS, Olympic Day encourages the participation of American youth in Olympic and Paralympic sport;

WHEREAS, Olympic Day will encourage the teaching of Olympic history, health, arts and culture among America's youth;

WHEREAS, Olympic Day will encourage America's youth to support the selection of Chicago, Illinois as the host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games;

WHEREAS, enthusiasm for Olympic and Paralympic sport is at an all time high;

WHEREAS, more than 50 percent of the earth's population currently lives in urban environments, and by 2030 it is estimated that 65 percent will be urban dwellers by that time;

WHEREAS, only one-third of urban children are able to participate in team sport;

WHEREAS, only 15 percent of urban girls are able to participate in team sport;

WHEREAS, the Urban Youth Sports Initiative engages the urban youth of America in Olympic and Paralympic sport;

WHEREAS, the Urban Youth Sport Initiative seeks to provide America's youth with skills that will benefit them for a lifetime; NOW, therefore let it be resolved that the U.S. Conference of Mayors

  • Supports Olympic Day and the goals that Olympic Day pursues;

  • Supports the Urban Youth Sport Initiative, and the goals that the Urban Youth Sports Initiative pursues; and

  • Encourages the cities of America to adopt and implement the model of the Urban Youth Sports Initiative

  • Encourages the International Olympic Committee to select Chicago, Illinois as the Host City for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
