77th Annual Meeting

ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ANNUAL MAYORS' "KIDS' DAY" CELEBRATION

WHEREAS, childhood is a time to live, play, and learn; and

WHEREAS, Kids' Day was created in Green Bay in 2003, as a way to show children how special they are to their families, how city government connects to their everyday lives, and how important they are to the future of the city; and

WHEREAS, Kids' Day has been established to take place six months from Christmas on June 25th of every year, achieving resounding success, more activities and greater participation over each of the past six years; and

WHEREAS, all Kids' Day events are provided for free by City staff, community volunteers, and business sponsors to thousands of children each year, including activities such as baseball games, movies, inflatable games, music, fireworks, lunch, swimming, bowling, amusement park rides, ice cream, soda and much, much more; and

WHEREAS, Kids' Day serves to reinforce the City's appreciation of community volunteerism and the hard work of youth in school, educates children about services and connects them to City staff, including department heads, and shows them the love and respect they deserve; and

WHEREAS, the Seventh Annual Mayor's Kids' Day Celebration will take place on June 25, 2009, shortly after the U.S. Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the U.S. Conference of Mayors proclaims the twenty-fifth of June of every year to be Mayors' Kids' Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the U.S. Conference of Mayors urges its members to institute Kids' Day recognition and activities in their own cities that honor the contributions of youth within their families and community.
