The U.S. Conference of Mayors


WHEREAS, with characteristic grace, warmth, and verve, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and his vibrant city of Los Angeles have given a spectacular welcome and birthday party for the 75th Anniversary Celebration of The United States Conference of Mayors, June 22-26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Villaraigosa leads one of the greatest cities on the globe, which, as he points out, "is not only at the intersection of the world's commerce and trade but also at the nexus of research, innovation, and creativity;" and

WHEREAS, Mayor Villaraigosa believes that as able stewards of the public good, mayors "have to be willing to wade into the weeds and take on the thorniest issues, regardless of the political cost or consequences;" and

WHEREAS, testimony to Mayor Villaraigosa's willingness to face squarely the thorniest issues is his absolute commitment to: Make Los Angeles the cleanest and greenest big city in the nation; Achieve permanent fiscal responsibility in his city government; Enhance the quality of life of all citizens by expanding basic services; Build a sense of community while celebrating the diversity among his four million citizens, who speak a total of 224 languages and live on a land area of 469 square miles; Effectively deal with traffic congestion and transit planning; Increase public safety through measures such as his comprehensive and community-based anti-gang strategy, which is not only tough on crime but equally tough on the root causes of crime; Fight for and bring about positive change in education through his strategy of reform for the Los Angeles Unified School District; Expand renewable energy sources; and Expand affordable housing and address homelessness, including permanent, supportive housing for the chronically addicted and the mentally ill; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Villaraigosa has been an outstanding host to this 75th Annual Meeting, giving the mayors of the United States, their spouses, families, and staff, and all other conference participants, the opportunity to enjoy myriad events and to learn firsthand about the best practices and programs of his Administration; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Villaraigosa has made sure that all events stimulated our minds and heightened our appreciation for the variety of activities in Los Angeles, including: The lively Welcome Reception, Poolside Under the Stars, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel on Friday evening, June 22, complete with music, great food, and entertainment; The glamour, glitz, and excitement of the unforgettable "Walk on the Red Carpet" on Saturday evening, June 23, followed by dinner, dancing, and music in the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland; Sunday, June 24's visit to Universal Studios Hollywood, the largest film and TV studio in the world, which has enthralled people throughout the world for almost a hundred years; and The Monday evening event, June 25, which showcased the crown jewel of Los Angeles - Griffith Observatory, for stargazing, a planetarium show, a buffet-style dinner, and views of the Los Angeles basin from on high; The variety of spouse and family tours; and Both traveling and in-house workshops, which provided in-depth information about Los Angeles' city programs and policies. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that all mayors of the United States, joined by their families and staff, Conference of Mayors staff, and all other conference participants at this great 75th Annual Conference of Mayors, salute our world-class host Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, mayor extraordinaire, who leads his city with competence and ability, practicality, exceptional skill at building broad bipartisan coalitions, strength, vision, and the supreme belief, learned from his mother's example, that if you live life with confidence, you will achieve your dreams; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the mayors of the United States and all conference participants warmly thank Mayor Villaraigosa, his dedicated and excellent staff, volunteers from the City of Los Angeles, generous sponsors of events, and everyone else who contributed to the resounding success of our great 75th Annual Meeting, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the mayors of the United States and all conference participants thank Mayor Villaraigosa for all we have learned from him in this amazing "City of Angels," the essence of which is this: believe in the common good, believe in the goodness that lies within every human being, let this belief guide our life and work, and we will be touched by and we will behold "the better angels of our nature."
