RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING WELLINGTON E. WEBB, MAYOR OF DENVER ON HIS TENURE AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF MAYORS

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb’s presidency has been marked by the strongest of commitment to the promoting of the economic and social interests of cities at not only the nation, but also the international level; and

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb’s declaration that "the 21st Century will be the Century of Cities" has resounded across the country and the world; from the state house to the White House, from London to Paris and Beijing to Dakar; and

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb’s presidency has been marked by a year of firsts, he was the first person to serve simultaneously as the president of the United States Conference of Mayors President and the National Conference of Black Mayors; and

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb was the first mayor to ring the closing of the New York Stock Exchange, an historic day on which after several days of significant losses the stock market actually rose 21 points; and

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb was the first mayor and only the third American to speak before the German parliament in their new unified parliamentary building; and

WHEREAS, on policy issues, Wellington E. Webb has been the voice of mayors across the nation bringing a ten point plan to the American public which recognizes the vitality of cities while maintaining a strong commitment to the needs of the disenfranchised; and

WHEREAS, Wellington E. Webb specifically has maintained a strong commitment to eradicating gun violence, bringing the message of gun safety to the nation, to families, to individuals, whether on the Today Show or the National Mall; and

WHEREAS, in all these endeavors, Wellington E. Webb has maintained a commitment to excellence, a willingness to partner with non-traditional allies, and above all a resolute belief in the integrity of the American people,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the United States Conference of Mayors thanks Mayor Wellington E. Webb for his service to this organization and for his vision, which has brought into being so many significant new initiatives during this past year; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Conference of Mayors looks forward to Mayor Wellington E. Webb’s continued involvement as past president of the Conference of Mayors; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that mayors of this nation wish Mayor Wellington E. Webb the greatest success, both now and in the future, respectfully and warmly saluting his career as a local elected official.
