NATIONAL CARE FOR STUDENTS DAY

WHEREAS, the current hectic pace of American society and violent trends in music, movies and television, American youth is more susceptible to negative outside influences than ever before; and

WHEREAS, parents and relatives need to make a more concerted effort to stay in touch with their own children as well as children in their communities; and

WHEREAS, with these thoughts in mind, on April 20, 2000 the Minnesota Vikings Head coach Dennis Green launched a grass roots initiative, National Care for Students Day, to deliver a positive message for young people to remember April 20, the anniversary of Columbine High shootings, as a positive message to young people; and

WHEREAS, the day was an overwhelming success,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the U.S. Conference of Mayors calls upon the major sports leagues and other organizations to work with the Conference to undertake activities in communities on April 20, 2001 as part of National Care for Students Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the mayors work with local organizations in their own communities to commemorate National Care for Students Day.
