HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
UNSAFE CHILDRENS PRODUCTS
WHEREAS, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) works to reduce the risk of
injuries and death from consumer products through the education and enforcement of
mandatory recall standards; and
WHEREAS, the CPSC has responsibility for products used in or around the home,
schools, day care centers and in recreational facilities; and
WHEREAS, the CPSC issues mandatory safety standards, participates in the
development of voluntary safety standards, educates the public about dangerous products
and recalls from the market place and consumers dangerously defective products; and
WHEREAS, the CPSC conducts 250 and 300 recalls each year; and
WHEREAS, recent reports concerning the deaths and injuries of children in child
care facilities due to recalled childrens products suggest that dangerous products
continue to be sold and are otherwise available for use by the public; and
WHEREAS, cities like Chicago have pledged to work with child care advocates to
assist the CPSC perform its statutory obligations,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of Mayors supports
efforts to increase public awareness regarding recalled products; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of Mayors will assist the
Consumer Product Safety Commission in efforts to increase compliance with recalled product
orders.
