OLDER AMERICANS ACT REAUTHORIZATION
WHEREAS, the Older Americans Act is the major vehicle for the delivery of social
and nutrition services for millions of older Americans; and
WHEREAS, Congress has failed to consider one of the most important issues facing
older Americans, the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, since the Act expired in
September 1995; and
WHEREAS, for the last four years funding has been continued by the
appropriations process; and
WHEREAS, although funding continues for the Older Americans Act, aging
organizations are concerned that the delay in enacting reauthorization legislation could
jeopardize programs for the elderly,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of Mayors supports
efforts to give older Americans a level of support and security; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of Mayors encourages Congress to
enact legislation that will assist elderly citizens in having a fulfilled retirement by
supporting their need to live independently in their own communities and homes and
ensuring that those who live in institutions are treated with dignity and care; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that The U.S. Conference of Mayors calls upon Congress
and the Administration to reauthorize the Older Americans Act.
