URBAN ECONOMIC POLICY

URGING QUICK ACTION ON THE APPOINTMENT OF A PERMANENT DIRECTOR FOR THE U.S. BUREAU OF THE CENSUS

WHEREAS, the Director of the United States Bureau of the Census resigned in January 1998 and the position has been held by an Acting Director for the past several months; and

WHEREAS, the next census count which is scheduled for the year 2000 is only a year and a half away and serious questions exist as to when an accurate census count will occur; and

WHEREAS, it is important that there be leadership firmly in place to ensure that the U.S. Bureau of the Census is adequately prepared to conduct a fair and accurate count,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The U. S. Conference of Mayors urges the President, to move quickly as possible in nominating, for U.S. Senate confirmation, a permanent Director of the U.S. Bureau of the Census; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the President and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
