JOBS, EDUCATION AND THE WORKFORCE

REAUTHORIZATION OF THE CORPORATION FOR NATIONAL SERVICE

WHEREAS, people of all ages have been serving and building our cities since their beginnings; and

WHEREAS, participants in Corporation for National Service programs are ‘getting things done’ by building communities, strengthening individuals and spreading an ethic of service in our cities; and

WHEREAS, cities today benefit from the services and volunteer efforts of many students with Learn and Serve America, 40,000 full and part-time AmeriCorps members, and over 500,000 National Senior Corps volunteers; and

WHEREAS, young people are a tremendous asset and resource for our cities, and desire to give back to their community through Learn and Serve school and community based programs; and

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps programs (local, state and national) provide direct service to our cities, AmeriCorps VISTA members build the capacity of organizations, and National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members aid our cities during disasters and help restore the environment; and

WHEREAS, our aging and experienced population share their talents , hearts and minds as Grandparents, Senior Companions and RSVP volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Corporation for National Service promotes days of service such as Martin Luther King Day and Youth Service Day, and assists our cities in accomplishing the goals of America Reads and America’s Promise; and

WHEREAS, the federal government provides funding for the Corporation for National Service, and a bill for reauthorization was submitted and introduced into Congress; and

WHEREAS, mayors have supported and served side by side with Corporation for Service volunteers,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the United States Conference of Mayors reauthorization by Congress of the Corporation for National Service.
