ARTS, CULTURE AND RECREATION 

"THE ARTS ENRICH US ALL" CAMPAIGN

WHEREAS, the arts enrich us as a nation, helping us to shape the quality of American life and define ourselves as a people; and

WHEREAS, the arts enrich our communities, breathing new life into neighborhoods, revitalizing downtowns and drawing millions of visitors to local cultural attractions each year; and

WHEREAS, the arts enrich our children, sparking creativity in their thinking skills and improving academic achievement through a comprehensive arts education; and

WHEREAS, the United States Conference of Mayors’ arts partner, Americans for the Arts, has joined with The Ad Council to develop public service announcements based on the success of "The Arts Enrich Us All" campaign created last year by the CBS Television and Americans for the Arts; and

WHEREAS, Americans for the Arts will expand "The Arts Enrich Us All" campaign for National Arts and Humanities Month this October, 1998 to focus specifically on the value of the arts to children; and

WHEREAS, October 1, 1998, will be celebrated nationally as "Young at Art Day;" and

WHEREAS, the United States Conference of Mayors has a special interest in promoting arts programs for children and youth at-risk in order to help develop well-balanced and educated individuals and to help reduce juvenile delinquency,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the United States Conference of Mayors urges mayors to promote the ways in which the arts enrich us all, and specifically the lives of children, during the month of October, which is National Arts and Humanities Month.
