INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL

WHEREAS, the State of Israel commemorated its 50th Anniversary on April 30, 1998, marking the declaration of its independence; and

WHEREAS, for the past 50 years, the State of Israel has been home to legions of people in search of religious freedom; and

WHEREAS, the 50th Anniversary offers an opportunity to give expression to the firm commitment of the State of Israel to keeping it a place where all people are welcome to freely practice their faiths; and

WHEREAS, The United States Conference of Mayors, in cooperation with The American Jewish Congress, through its sponsorship of the Annual Jerusalem Conference of Mayors, has developed and maintained a strong relationship with the State of Israel; and

WHEREAS, The United States Conference of Mayors was represented by a delegation of American Mayors attending the 18th Annual Jerusalem Conference of Mayors, held May 9-16, 1998,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we urge The U.S. Conference of Mayors to initiate and encourage appropriate cultural activities honoring the 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel and the enormous contribution this nation has made throughout its history.
