  • Thanks to Mayor McCrory and all members of the Environment Committee for the opportunity to speak to you and for your work as Mayors and as environmentalists.

The International Council for Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is pleased to have a relationship with the US Conference of Mayors and with the many cities represented by Conference members Mayors and cities.

We are proud that USCM sent a delegation of Mayors representing all of you to ICLEI's Local Government Session at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa this fall. The U.N. recognizes ICLEI as the voice of local government in the world. USCM Assistant Executive Director Judy Sheahan was also in South Africa and did a terrific job with the delegation and as a friend to ICLEI. Mayor James Garner attended the conference and was also an official US delegate to the UN negotiations.

ICLEI has three campaigns that developed out of the last World Summit in Rio de Janeiro. -- Water, Local Agenda 21, and Cities for Climate Protection.

My presentation is in regard to the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) in the United States. 140 local governments reduce energy use, save tax payers dollars and improve their communities through the CCP. All benefits of the campaign are free to participating jurisdictions.

My presentation is an invitation to all U.S. Cities to be come participants in the CCP Cities for Climate Protection program.
