In a recent survey, the Conference of Mayors found that many cities – more than 70 percent – plan to incorporate ENERGY STAR tools and resources into their Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant-funded programs. As such, the Conference is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to raise awareness and provide information on how ENERGY STAR can support city-based energy initiatives. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, cities are receiving substantial funding to implement energy efficiency initiatives, including improvements to city-owned buildings. With an average of 30 percent of the energy used in buildings going to waste, existing buildings represent one of the best opportunities for immediate and cost-effective reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
