Mayors Climate Protection Center  
Earth Day 2009 Activities

Hundreds of mayors in cities nationwide are doing their part to protect our environment, by not only signing the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement (900+ cities are signed on so far), but also by hosting a series of local events on Earth Day, ranging from: tree plantings, to recycling and energy & water efficiency and conservation events.  Below is a listing of some of the events taking place in America’s cities:

Earth Day Event: The City of Asheville is hosting an Earth Day Expo focused on energy efficiency. The expo will educate the community on sustainability initiatives the city has integrated.

Atlanta, GA

Earth Day Event: Earth Hour- The City of Atlanta participated a 2nd year as a flag ship city.
Date of event: Over 500 buidlings went dark on April 29th in support of Earth Hour.

Earth Day Event: The Human Face of Climate Change Art Exhibit at City Hall. Sponsored by CARE International and the City of Altanta. The exhibit consists 8 pieces photographic art that address the injustices of climate change on the poor in the developing world. It also explains what CARE is doing to help people adapt to climate change and has a call to action. 
Date of event: The exhibit is on display at City Hall from April 20 through April 30th.  Over 1000 people are expected to see the exhibit.

Earth Day Event: The City of Bowling Green does not have a specific Earth Day event on April 22nd but we do have an Arbor Event every year that coincides with Earth Day.  Our Arbor Day celebration is held at a public park and is free to the public. Earth Day Event: Earth Week activities will involve collecting old athletic shoes for our Nike® Reuse-A-Shoe program at our Elk Grove School District schools and the Cosumnes CSD fire stations. All of the sneakers collected will be sent to Nike® to be reground and turned into sports surfaces like basketball courts and running tracks.

Fremont celebrated Earth Day on April 18, 2009 with an Earth Day Fair in Central Park. Over 30 exhibitors participated and nearly 900 people attended.  Earth Day visitors had a chance to learn more about waste reduction and recycling, conserving water, reducing energy use, protecting wildlife and the watershed, preventing pollution, reducing the use of toxic products at home, and bay friendly gardening techniques.

Earth Day Event: Green Youth Service Project - Middle school students from the Gaithersburg Youth Club will earn student service learning hours by planting the City’s first "Green Streets" project on Rabbitt Road. This project is designed to remove pollutants from storm water before it enters a city stream.

Earth Day Event: Hartford Compost 2009 - Mayor Eddie A Perez will hold a news briefing at the Niles Street Community Garden at noon to announce the availability of free organic compost for city gardeners.  All event attendees will receive a quart of fresh organic compost in recyclable corn containers.  The event will focus on urban agriculture, and the value and benefits of fresh, healthy local food grown by local residents.

Earth Day Event: The City of Hallandale Beach is providing Water Wise kits. The Mayor is holding a city challenge for every resident to do at least one thing for Earth Day to save our climate. They are partnering with a local school to distribute pocket ashtrays. As a note 50% of all trash on the beach is from cigarette butts.

Earth Day Event: Over 300 Lansing area students spent the day at City Hall teaching one another about local environmental issues.  Students gave presentations, set up informational displays and participated in a number of interactive projects, such as seed planting and recycled paper making.  The event was focused on empowering young people to prevent climate change.

Earth Day Event: The city’s Partnership for a Green City released its Climate Action Report – which audits the community’s carbon footprint and offers 175 recommendations to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. (The Partnership is a consortium of Louisville Metro Government, the University of Louisville, and Jefferson County Public Schools.)

Earth Day Event: Meridian/Lauderdale County Beautiful Earth Day activity was a park cleanup and planting of 40 trees at Highland Park. Hundred year-old trees lost or damaged during hurricanes were replaced.

The Grand Prize winner was recognized at the April 13, 2009, North Little Rock City Council meeting.  The Grand Prize winner's poster and one poster from 11 elementary schools will be displayed on: the City's website, the North Little Rock School District's website, and in the local newspaper, North Little Rock Times.  Each winner received a
Certificate of Achievement and a gift certificate.

Earth Day Event: Green Aquatic Installation - In recognition of Earth Day, a green aquatic habitat will be installed in Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando. The floating mats, habitat and lush wetland vegetation are the artistic expression of Jefre Figueras Manuel, known as JEFRĖ, an inventive public artist based in the City Arts Factory. JEFRĖ's green piece has a number of ecological benefits, such as the aquatic grasses composed of Yellow Canna, Soft Rush and Bent Grass will help regulate water levels, oxygenate the water, control nutrients, remove pesticides, purify water quality and provide habitat for the local birds and wildlife.

Earth Day Event: Launched EcoMap, a unprecedented web-based application to help individuals make better environmental choices.  EcoMap was developed in partnership with Cisco’s Connected Urban Development program to help residents improve their daily decisions in the areas of transportation, energy, and waste.  Through the EcoMap visual display, residents can see their greenhouse gas contributions and take specific actions such as alternative-fuel vehicle ownership, recycling, and reducing household energy use. Citizens can then share their climate actions with others via social networking.  In the process of using EcoMap, residents become more environmentally aware and change their behaviors in environmentally positive ways.

Earth Day Event: Mayor Nickels will announce his Green Building Capital Initiative, a plan to achieve greater energy efficiency in homes and businesses. Event will include a demonstration of state-of-the-art diagnostics used to analyze a home's heating and cooling systems.

Earth Day Events: The Taylor Community Library will present an Earth Day program to include stories, crafts and flower plantings.  The City also will conduct a series of tree plantings on school grounds and in parks. Additionally, the City of Taylor has conducted yearly community tree plantings for decades and has been named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for 18 consecutive years.

Earth Day Event: Area residents donated two trailers of unused and leftover paint to the City's Graffiti Team, recycled waste electronics and exchanged their mercury thermometers for safer digital ones.  They also enjoyed opportunities to view displays by 10 local environmental businesses, agencies and organizations, observe a demonstration of seining and surveying to evaluate the water quality of the Swan Creek and take tours of the Highland Park Dam Remediation Project.
