The Westergasfabriek Factory was built on farmland on the outskirts of Amsterdam in 1883; it provided gas for street lighting. This continued until the discovery of large natural gas reserves in the north of Holland during the 1960's. Comprising originally of thirteen buildings, the factory complex was built in the then popular Dutch neo-renaissance style, with its distinct use of red brick and stepped gables.
