The U.S. Conference of Mayors' Cities and Borders Task Force was established in 2000 in response to the growing impact of US-Mexico and US-Canada border and related issues on cities and metropolitan urban centers throughout the United States and its territories.

Chaired jointly by Detroit Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick and Yuma Mayor Lawrence K. Nelson, the work of the Cities and Borders Task Force since 2000 has provided increased impetus for the elevation of border concerns to the national level. There is now widespread national recognition that our borders and border (or land-based) ports-of-entry are critical to the strength, growth and vibrancy of our national economy and our physical national security.

Detroit and Yuma are cities well-positioned for day-to-day border perspectives. Detroit is the largest overland port-of-entry on the country's northern border with Canada. Yuma's development is attributed in part to its history as an important transportation hub and it sits in close proximity to the southern border with Mexico.

The Task Force is the Conference forum for discussion of the impact and effects on cities throughout the country of national border issues and federal policies and practices affecting development in border cities and border ports-of-entry.
