About the Mayor

October 9, 2000

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley accepted the 2000 Trustees Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Policy in Los Angeles November 2. The National Trust for Historic Preservation presented the prestigious award to Mayor Daley for his positive and effective brand of leadership in reviving Chicago's landmark buildings and districts. At the annual National Preservation Conference, where the award was presented, the Mayor said he is "committed to saving Chicago's architectural treasures for future generations of Chicagoans and visitors to enjoy."

In California, twenty-eight year old San Carlos Mayor David Buckmaster will cut short his term as mayor effective January, in part because of the shortage of affordable housing in the town of 28,000. The Mayor announced Nov. 13 that he and his wife will move to the Sacramento area where his employer, an internet insurance services company recently relocated, and where he can fulfill a dream of being able to purchase an affordable home. The mayor previously served five years on the City Council, won a term as the Bay Area's youngest mayor and then was reelected in 1999. The Council has an option to appoint a person to fill all of the unexpired term, to fill it until the next election, or to call for an election.
