October 2000 marks USCM's tenth year of promoting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), a major event for the Mayors' Campaign Against Breast Cancer now in its fourth year. USCM is combining its observation of NBCAM with the advancement of September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM), reported upon in an earlier issue of U.S. Mayor.
In promoting NBCAM, mayors are issuing proclamations, writing letters to editors, initiating public information campaigns, and encouraging city employees to seek breast cancer screening, among other activities. In particular, they are urging underserved women over 50 years of age to take advantage of mammography supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which backs USCM's cancer awareness programs through a five-year cooperative agreement.
If you would like to learn more about the breast cancer campaign or the four month old prostate cancer coalition, please contact Richard C. Johnson, Director of USCM Health Programs, who may be reached at 202-861-6753. | Mayors Reporting on Special Activities for 2000 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
