Mayor Anthony Masiello Hosts Partner America® Small Business Conference

October 9, 2000

Buffalo Mayor Anthony M. Masiello hosted a Partner America® small business conference on September 18. More than 200 CEOs and managers of small and mid-sized companies attended a day-long forum sponsored by the city in conjunction with the US Conference of Mayors Partner Americaª initiative. The small business summit was billed as a first-of-a-kind event in the region.

Mayor Masiello kicked-off the event at 8:15 am with welcoming remarks followed by Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corporation (BERC) President Alan DeLisle. Lunch was highlighted with a keynote from New York State Comptroller H. Carl McCall. Following the formal welcoming remarks, George Cloutier, Chairman of Partner America® and Chairman and CEO of American Management Services, delivered his presentation titled, "Do You Want To Make a Profit — The Partner America Challenge." Cloutier engaged the audience by asking them about their difficulties and challenges in trying to run a business to achieve profits. Cloutier stressed his belief that most problems faced by small businesses are likely rooted in poor management, and are not problems of simple finance. Other seminars focused on import-export opportunities, landing government contracts and boosting sales through the Internet.

Mayor Masiello began planning for the small business conference when he hosted a small business roundtable in July with local business leaders. Mayor Masiello was extremely pleased with the community's response to the event, and viewed the day as a success for the small business community of Buffalo. The information presented throughout this conference may be utilized by Buffalo's small businesses in order to increase profit, and bolster business growth. "Small businesses are responsible for today's strong national and local economy. The contribution of providing jobs, products and services strengthen the local community's economic and social infrastructure by increasing the tax base and generating funding for the cities and towns in which they do business," said Mayor Masiello.
