Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin, Chair of the Conference of Mayors Criminal and Social Justice Committee, has been appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to serve on its State and Local Advisory Group which will advise the federal government on issues related to weapons of mass destruction.

The panel, organized under the National Domestic Preparedness Office within DOJ, is comprised of state and local "first response" personnel including emergency planners, health, fire and police representatives. The group will focus on the coordination of preparedness efforts for a nuclear, chemical or biological attack, and help design plans for emergency response. Mayor Griffin joined Attorney General Janet Reno and Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James Lee Witt for the group"s first meeting on September 26-27.

With the support of the Department of Justice, the Conference of Mayors has also been working closely with Texas A&M University on the development of a mayoral training program to help prepare mayors for the possibility of a WMD attack, and the very specific differences between such an attack and a natural disaster.
