The Senate Appropriations Committee approved
its FY 2001 funding bill which covers the Department of Justice and key
city law enforcement programs on July 18. The Senate committee bill
provides only $400 million for the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant
(LLEBG). The House-passed funding bill (HR 4690) would provide $523
million for LLEBG, the same as provided in previous years.
As for the COPS program, the Senate committee
bill contains $812 million. This is more than the $595 million in new
funding contained in the House bill, but less than President Clinton's FY
2001 budget request of $1.335 billion. COPS received $913 million in FY
2000.
