Former Wilmington Mayor Tom Maloney, elected at
age 30, died July 19. He was 58.
Maloney served as mayor of Wilmington,
Delaware's largest city, from 1973 to 1977. After an unsuccessful race for
the U.S. Senate, Maloney was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as
Mid-Atlantic director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development.
Wilmington Mayor James Sills credited Maloney
with beginning the revitalization of downtown. Other political leaders
including Governor Tom Carper (DE) and Senator Joseph Biden (DE) hailed
Maloney for his work in bringing a new and younger generation of leaders
into politics.
Both Sills and Maloney were first elected to
the Wilmington City Council in 1968.
Maloney had been serving as executive director
of a non-profit drug and alcohol counseling agency.
