In preparation for the 2000 National Democratic
Convention in Los Angeles, Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe
Andrews announced on July 20 the appointment of officers to preside over
the Convention at the Staples Center. Press for the event will be housed
next door at the recently renovated Convention Center. The United States
Conference of Mayors Immediate Past President, Denver Mayor Wellington E.
Webb and U. S. Conference of Mayors Advisory Board Chairman Boston Mayor
Thomas M. Menino were among those named as vice chairs of the Convention.
California's Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer will
serve as chairs of the Convention.
Also, U. S. Conference of Mayors Trustee and
Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton was appointed co-chair of the
Platform Committee and San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales was named co-chair of
the Credentials Committee. The Platform Committee is responsible for
drafting and recommending a proposed National Platform for approval at the
Convention and the Credentials Committee is charged with resolving any
disputes that may come up over the selection of delegates and alternates
to the Convention.
Several events have been planned for Democratic Mayors
during the Convention. A reception honoring Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer,
who is president of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors, will be
held on Sunday, August 13 at the Peterson Automotive Museum from 3:30
p.m.-5:30 p.m. On Monday, August 14, the U. S. Conference of Mayors will
host a luncheon in honor of Democratic Mayors from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at
the Beverly Hills Hotel, Rodeo Ballroom. On Tuesday, August 15 Long Beach
Mayor Beverly O'Neill will host a Democratic Mayors Brunch from 10:30
a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
Also on Tuesday, August 15 the U. S. Conference of
Mayors along with Fannie Mae, the National Association of Counties and the
National Conference of Black Mayors, will host an evening event honoring
Democratic Mayors and County Elected Officials. This event will be held at
the Paramount Studios, Bronson Gate Area from 8:00 p.m.-12:00
midnight.
