The House Judiciary Committee approved a
five-year reauthorization of the grant programs contained in the 1994
Violence Against Women Act on June 27, and the Senate Judiciary Committee
took the same action on companion legislation on June 29. The new bills
(HR 1248/S 2787) would authorize $3 billion over five years for grant
programs to local governments and states to combat violence against
women.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted a
resolution at its recent 68th Annual Conference of Mayors in Seattle
supporting reauthorization of this law.
