By Debra DeHoney-Howard

Akron Mayor and Membership Standing Committee Chairman, Donald L. Plusquellic, at an orientation session for Mayors attending their first Annual Conference of Mayors meeting, urged them to get involved. Speaking about his thirteen years with the Conference, Mayor Plusquellic said the Conference has enabled him to network with his fellow colleagues across the nation and learn new ways to implement new programs for the City of Akron.

Joining Mayor Plusquellic in the orientation session were Housing and Urban Development Counselor, Howard Glasser and Conference of Mayors Executive Director, J. Thomas Cochran. Mr. Cochran encouraged Mayors to become an active player on the Conference scene and that, through our traditional format "one mayor, one vote", cities with populations of 30,000 can be participate in the ten Standing Committees that cover all urban issues.

Mr. Glasser described key federal programs of his agency and HUD’s role in critical areas of Housing and Urban Development. Mr. Glasser invited Mayors to access HUD programs through the Mayor’s Desk, a new initiative and also through their website, http://www.hud.gov.
