Mayors and NFL Discuss Mutual Issues

Meeting with representatives from the National Football League and other major sports leagues, mayors heard a presentation from the NFL about a new set of proposed rules that will address the concerns of mayors on franchise movements and private sector contributions to stadium construction. Joe Browne, Senior Vice President for Communications and Government Relations briefed the mayors on the proposed changes.

The mayors were also briefed on the many different youth sports programs offered by the major sports leagues. Beth Colleton from the National Football League talked about the NFL’s youth football fund program, the NFL’s youth education town program and the NFL’s Community Football Fields program which helps to restore and build football fields in NFL team cities.

Stephen Bell from Major League Baseball talked about the MLB’s RBI program for inner-city youth. Bryant McBride from the National Hockey League made a presentation on NHL’s in-line hockey arena program. He was accompanied by Willie O’Ree, the first African-American professional hockey player.
