Mayors Urge Congress to Re-Authorize Welfare-To-Work

Over the next several months the reauthorization of Welfare-to-Work (WTW) is a critical budget issue for mayors who have a laser-like focus on ensuring that it is funded at the President’s proposal of $1 billion for the FY 2000 budget.

The United States Conference of Mayors at the 67th Annual Conference of Mayors, sent a letter to all members of Congress urging them to reauthorize Welfare-to-Work. The Mayors also unanimously passed a resolution on Welfare-to-Work (see resolutions summary), calling for Best Practices and research on families leaving welfare. For further information contact Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer, Chair of the Mayor’s Welfare-To-Work Task Force, or Joan Crigger of the Conference staff at (202) 861-6726.
