| Task Force Explores
"EPR" By Geri Powel  Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Solid Waste Task Force addressed the issue of extended producer/product responsibility (EPR) during the task force meeting in New Orleans on June 12, 1999. Ellen Ryan, President of the Municipal Waste Management Association (MWMA), and Solid Waste Director of San Jose, California, presented a brief but comprehensive overview of the history of EPR in Europe and its current status in the U.S. After discussion and comment from mayors, city representatives, and solid waste directors, Mayor Watson asked that the MWMA and the Solid Waste Task Force continue to work closely together to examine the benefits and challenges of a variety of approaches to EPR in America.
