Elected in 1986, Mayor Giulianti, a physician's wife, was committed to arrest the city's decline. The article says the mayor led a community-wide drive to transform a sleepy town. Sixty new businesses have opened downtown and construction is underway on downtown luxury apartments and a commercial-residential complex.
The downtown renaissance was built on a foundation of civic activism and innovative financing. For her part, Mayor Giulianti says it was a long time coming. "It reminds me of the actors who are finally "discovered" who have been working at their craft for years," says the mayor.
