Reno in Reno: U.S. Attorney General Salutes Nation's Mayors
Reno remarked that Mayors are in the forefront of the fight to save America's youth and that they should tell the "Feds" what they need to get the job done.
"With a dedicated stream of funding from the federal government and the mayors leadership, we can change the face of America permanently so domestic youth violence is no longer the norm."
Preceding Reno was Salt Lake City Police Chief Rueben Ortega. Ortega warned the mayors not to become complacent with lower crime statistics over the past few years. " The long run answer to crime is crime prevention," Ortega said. Ortega also told the mayors that they should demand that half of all new taxes from the sale of tobacco products be put into child care and crime prevention programs.

Travel Channel Announces New Partnership With Mayors
Jay Feldman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Travel Channel announced the formation of a new partnership between The Travel Channel and the Conference of Mayors at the closing session of the 66th Annual Conference of Mayors.
The partnership is designed to promote the nation’s cities and mayors and enhance tourism and economic development. It will leverage the collective energies and capabilities of the Travel Channel to showcase cities as key travel destinations. Twenty million plus viewers of the Travel Channel will travel to cities with a greater understanding of what awaits them and a greater knowledge of activities and opportunities that are in the cities for them to take advantage of and enjoy.
This partnership will work to provide opportunities such as developing: on-air program segments which focus on cities’ historical and cultural attractions, public service announcements produced by the Travel Channel promoting the exploration of our cities, promotion and public relations opportunities with the mayors to partner with their local cable company and schools, and city-based programs which would run nationally and regionally in which the mayors can act as the lead-in host for their city’s segment based on program availability.
Over the next six months the Travel Channel will be exploring opportunities for mayors to promote their cities. Updates on the program will appear in future editions of US MAYOR.
For more information on this new partnership contact Babette Penton at the U.S. Conference of Mayors at 202.293.7330.

President Corradini: "Youth in our Cities will be the Theme of My Presidency"
On Tuesday, June 23, Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini was installed as the 56th President of The United States Conference of Mayors.
Only the third female to hold this position in the Conference's history, Mayor Corradini opened her first address as president by saying, "Selection by my colleagues to take the gavel of this great organization is the highest honor."
Corradini said that she hoped that the year ahead would be most remembered "for the progress we make on improving the lives of youths in our cities. Youth in Our Cities -- that is my theme for the coming year. Our new and existing policies and many of our ongoing projects deal with youth in our cities. We will follow through on all of this."
In addressing youth in our cities, Corradini first raised the issue of school violence: "I want the Conference to turn its attention to a very difficult subject—but one we as the nation's leaders cannot ignore.
And that is the tragedies which have recently occurred in Arkansas, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Virginia and, Lord knows, can yet happen in other cities across the country -- violence in our schools caused by troubled children with guns."
"President Clinton," Corradini told the mayors, "has directed Secretary of Education Riley and Attorney General Reno to work with us at the local level to develop an early warning guide that might help prevent school violence."
"So that we do our part, I am calling for a 'Mayors Summit on School Violence and Kids from 2:00 to 8:00' to be held soon."
Corradini first plans to convene an initial meeting of mayors, law enforcement, educators, parents, federal and state officials, the news media, and the entertainment industry to focus on what kids are doing in the critical hours after school but before parents are home and how all can work together to prevent violence.
"We will work this like the crime bill -- focus first, develop a plan and work hard to get it implemented," Corradini said. "We have to get to the bottom of this issue and then get on top of it fast. And in the best Conference of Mayors tradition, we will. No more kids killed at school!"
