BACKGROUND:
3Com's Urban Challenge was first announced in July 1999 as an ongoing partnership with The United States Conference of Mayors. At The Conference's 69th Winter Meeting this past January, 3Com presented 10 awards to cities, totaling $1 million worth of products and services. Those ten winning cities were Atlanta, GA, Detroit, MI, Fort Worth, TX, Indianapolis, IN, Minneapolis, MN, Oakland, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Sandy City, UT, Troy, NY, and Vineland, NJ. With the announcement of these five award recipients, 3Com has to date contributed more than $2.5 million worth of technology-oriented goods and services to 25 cities across the nation.
The 3Com Urban Challenge helps to bridge the national Digital Divide by working directly with US Mayors to connect their communities and improve access to educational, health care, and other municipal resources. Through this program, 3Com will donate a total of $1 million annually in technology products, network design, and consulting services. The program has grown from 3Com's proven success in urban environments such as Boston and San Jose, Calif.
