Washington, D.C. – Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director of The U.S. Conference of Mayors issued the following statement on passage by The U.S. House of Representatives of the Water Resources Development Act of 2016:
“The nation’s Mayors are pleased that the House overwhelmingly passed the Water Resources Development Act (HR 5303) in such a strong, bipartisan fashion.
“This bill will bring much-needed investment to key infrastructure projects including harbors, locks, dams, flood protection, and other water resources projects. A strong national infrastructure is crucial if our country is to remain economically competitive with the rest of the world, and it is exactly why the nation’s mayors have made investing in and protecting cities a top priority.
“We are especially pleased that the bill included funds to replace drinking water pipes for the City of Flint. The Conference of Mayors stands with the citizens of Flint and Mayor Karen Weaver as they will finally be able to receive much-needed relief.
“We extend a special thanks to Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Bill Shuster (R-PA), Ranking Member Peter A. DeFazio (D-OR), Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee Chair Bob Gibbs (R-OH), and Ranking Member Grace Napolitano (D-CA), and the Michigan delegation for their tireless work on this important issue.”
